I just recognized that we have a new international Member, so maybe John himself can give us some details about the Boat? I think a great Number of Sailors in Germany could be interested in such an easy way to enter the RG65 Class.

Hello Roland, sorry this is in English but perhaps you can provide a translation.

We (Mike Weston, Mark Dicks and myself) were approached a year ago by a company called Ripmax (a large distributor of RC products in the UK) to develop a good, racing spec RC yacht to be built in China by Joysway. We only had about six weeks to design and produce a working prototype boat to be shipped off to China, so we decided to base the boat on Mark's existing ICE RG65 and keep it within the RG65 class rules. We supplied every detail they might need to produce a good boat and then waited as they turned that design into a product suitable for their blow-moulding ABS production methods. We didn't know what to expect from a company who's existing model yachts were just scale interpretations of full-sized boats with very poor rigging, but they have been great to work with and have kept us involved throughout the process.

The first sample boats we received about a month ago were too heavy, but the standard of finish and attention to detail were most impressive. This is the boat that Tobi refers to in his report of the UK championships. Since then we have received another boat with a much thinner hull moulding resulting in an all-up sailing weight of 1220gms (using a LiFe battery pack in place of the supplied 4 x AA battery pack). This reduction in weight means the boat now performs like a decent RG65 and is probably as light as we can expect a mass produced plastic boat to be. We are now going through some final alterations and the boat will shortly go into production for delivery in Feb/March next year.

The best bit of news is this:- The retail price in England is expected to be 140-160GBP! Yes, that's correct! This also includes a basic 2.4Ghz radio set and waterproof receiver. The rig is full area and based on my Graphite low-aspect A rig. The standard sail is single panel but works very well as you can see from the video on YouTube.

I don't know who the importer for Joysway products is in Germany, but Ripmax can sell in Europe so supply will be no problem. Mike Weston at RCYachts has 100 boats on pre-order, so he will be the person to contact for early orders.

In the UK we intend to start a restricted class within the RG65 class, based on the Dragon Force and allowing only three, controlled rigs and minimum changes to the standard boat. This will keep the cost down and should prove to be an effective entry level boat for club racing. We intend to race this division alongside the regular RG65 boats at events and have a special prize for the first Dragon Force class boat. We hope this will help to get the regular RG65 class strongly established in the UK. When we know the final detailed spec of the production boat we will produce a set of class rules for this restricted class.

I hope this gives you a good explanation of this project, but please ask any other questions and I'll keep in touch with this forum.

Best regards
